I’ll be honest. As a business owner, I have experienced downturns in business, and regardless of all the pep talks, it’s worrying. Not because I don’t believe in what I do, or because I’m suddenly questioning years of experience, but because when you’re a small business owner, business doesn’t just affect the business.
It affects everything. The decisions you make. The risks you’re willing to take. Your cash flow. Your confidence. Your sleep. And sometimes, if we’re being really honest, your peace of mind.
Social media is often filled with posts about record sales, explosive growth, and being “fully booked.” What we don’t talk about enough are the quieter seasons. The periods where the phone rings less. Enquiries slow down. Proposals sit unanswered. And you find yourself checking your emails far more often than you’d like to admit and making sure your phone isn’t on silent!
The reality is that many small and medium-sized businesses go through the same thing. Across industries, there are good businesses, run by good people, doing good work, who are facing tougher trading conditions than they’ve seen in years.
So, what’s the answer?
For me, it’s not to panic. It’s staying the course. Using the quieter periods to learn, reflect, improve systems, strengthen relationships, sharpen skills, and prepare for the next upswing. Because if there’s one thing I’ve learned over the years, it’s that business moves in seasons and the busiest periods often arrive right after those uncomfortable stretches when you start wondering where everyone disappeared to. The busy times don’t last forever. The quiet times don’t last forever either.
Sometimes resilience isn’t about growing. Sometimes resilience is simply about continuing. Showing up. Doing the work. Keeping the faith. And trusting that the actions you take today will create opportunities tomorrow.
If you’re navigating a quieter season in your business right now, you’re not alone.
Let’s keep going. 💙

P.S. If you’ve been in business long enough, you’ll know that the same person who worries when their calendar is empty is usually the same person complaining that they haven’t had a day off in three months once business picks up again. Business owners are a special breed. 😊
